A Complete Guide to Testing Accommodations for GMAT, GRE, TOEFL, MCAT, LSAT, USMLE & OET

GMAT accommodations for test-takers with disabilities include extra testing time, either a fifty percent extra time and in some cases 100 percent extra time, additional rest breaks, calculator, additional scratch sheets, separate location to reduce distractions, permission to use a medical device, and for those with a serious reading disability or dyslexia, a test reader or writer.

These accommodations require an evaluation and a diagnosis. Other accommodations can include enlarged font, a trackball mouse, and a sign language interpreter, or alternative format such as test in Braille for the blind. These do not require an evaluation.

For the TOEFL, administered by ETS, typical accommodations also include a time extension of 50 percent or 100 percent, and one can request to separate a test session over two days when 100 percent extra time is requested. For the TOEFL, one may request a spell-check device if spelling errors are extensive, although scores are not reduced for minor spelling errors. If errors are orthographic errors due to dyslexia and written language cannot be understood, it would be wise to request a test writer.

One can also request a test reader, a human reader, or a reader on tape. One can in addition request a separate room and extra breaks. It is a good idea to request to have a repetition on the listening portion for one who has attention and memory deficits, in which case the test automatically becomes paper-based as opposed to IBT. Please note that ETS needs at least six weeks to process the request.

Accommodations on the GRE also administered by ETS, are also available and the application and supporting documentation has to be in six weeks in advance too.

The most common GRE accommodations include extra time, separate room and extra breaks. There are accommodations for visual and hearing impairments, assistive technologies, and alternative test formats. Assistive technologies include screen readers, screen magnification, or the ability to select foreground and background colors for better visibility, readers and scribes or test writers. For students who need help reading or recording their answers, a reader can read the test aloud, and a scribe or test writer can record the student's answers. Alternative formats include Braille or large print versions of the test. There are accommodations for medical illness, such as for diabetes or multiple sclerosis or other health condition, such as breaks to take medication, special lighting or adjustable table. Accommodations for medical condition require a medical note and will usually not require a neuropsychological evaluation. Sign language interpreters are available for the deaf or hard of hearing.

For MCAT administered by AAMC typical accommodations include extended testing time such as fifty percent or time and a half, or double time (all though the latter accommodation is not standard and more difficult to obtain), extra breaks, and a separate testing room, and the ability to bring in necessary items like food or medication. With a fifty percent time extension, the testing is completed over two days. There are also "accessibility accommodations" such as adjustable height workstations, adaptive mouse, or text enlargement for those with visual impairment. IN some cases one can receive an accommodation to allow food and drink into the testing room due to a dietary or a medical condition. One can request stop the clock breaks, as an accommodation. This is for individuals to pause the timer during the exam to manage a condition or take medication, but they cannot be used for extra time on questions. Accommodations can be requested for the use of medication, inhalers or other medical devices during the exams.

For the LSAT available accommodations include extended time, additional breaks, testing in a distraction-free or separate room, a reader, scribe and testing in Braille or large print versions of the test. One can apply for permission to use a personal computer or other assistive technology, permission to sit or stand during testing, and permission to read aloud.

USMLE

USMLE takes 3 months to respond to accommodation applications. , The USMLE requires a higher level of proof than let us say ETS for accommodations on the TOEFL. One should provide very good supporting documentation along with your application.
